OUR MINIATURE LONG-HAIRED DACHSHUND BREEDING PROGRAM

We are driven to better the breed of miniature long-haired dachshunds through each litter, producing CKC-registered purebred dogs that are 100% fit for function. We carefully choose any dogs we add to our program, focusing on conformation, health, temperament, and working ability. We believe that each of these 4 elements is a key pillar that holds up our breeding program. Click through each tab below to find out more!

We breed to the Canadian Kennel Club standard, with consideration for maintaining working ability. This means that our dachshunds will have a consistent appearance, rendering them able to complete consistent functions. We believe in moderation and reject trends toward extreme features. When planning breeding pairings, we strive to better each generation's adherence to the written breed standard. We will only breed dogs with CKC or AKC championships, but that is the minimum for them to be considered. We are also constantly re-evaluating our dogs and will only breed dogs that have proper conformation and produce puppies with the same.

The Federation of Dachshund Clubs of Canada (FDCC) does not currently have a list of recommended health tests for breeders. We want to ensure the longest, healthiest lives for our dogs, so we go above and beyond in our health testing protocol. In order to be used in our breeding program, our dogs must have a full DNA panel done (we prefer Embark), which includes testing for PRA. We will only breed PRA clear-clear or clear-carrier pairings. Additionally, our dogs have their eyes checked by a Registered Veterinary Ophthalmologist prior to each breeding. Likewise, all our dogs have patellas, cardiac health, and thyroid function tested between 18 months and 2 years of age (prior to breeding) and must pass to be bred. Individual dogs may have additional testing, such as hips.

All our dogs are pets first. They live in our house, spend most of the day running around at our feet, and come along with us on all our adventures. We will not breed a dog with human or dog aggression, as these are not correct for the breed according to any standards.

It is a common misconception that canine temperament is all environmental - in fact, it is mostly genetic! As such, we only breed dogs that have proven consistently to be friendly, confident, clever, and lively, as a dachshund should be. There will always be some variability in temperaments, so we seek to match families with their perfect puppies, but all our dogs are happy and extremely confident!

We recognize that the vast majority of people in North America are not purchasing a dachshund for hunting purposes! However, their use as hunting dogs is an extremely important part of their heritage, and we believe in preserving their functionality as an extremely versatile hunting dog. Even if your dog is never going to go on the hunt, having that drive and ability is part of a dachshund's personality, and enables them to be successful at so many sports and activities! To make sure we preserve these abilities, we choose dogs for our breeding program that have a proven history of hunting ability through field trials, earthdog, tracking, or even Barn Hunt. Because each dog may have slightly different skills, we tailor the activities that we do with each of our dogs to suit their interests.
